Leto Farms of Letohatchee, Alabama, is owned by Frank and Harriett and their two sons Frank Jr. and Brice and is managed by Logan Whatley, Ranch Manager. The land where we run our commercial operation has been in our family’s name for four generations.
Leto Farms sets high expectations for our program and cattle, and we require a high performing cow that can deliver! CDP Brangus genetics run deep in the pedigrees of our herd. First calf heifers are AI’d to breed-leading Brangus bulls from CDP. The range bulls for natural service are also from CDP Brangus and selected to balance calving ease, adequate growth, and slightly above breed-average carcass traits.
Calving season starts in late September, and by mid – November Leto Farms is 90% calved out. Our pastures are divided into five age groups; virgin, first-calf, three-year-olds, four-to-six-year-olds and seven-year-olds and older This strict management accelerates the selection for maternal excellence and sets the cow herd up for profitability in the cattle market today and into the future.
Leto Farms raises our own replacement females and markets some as replacement females for other ranches. We retain ownership of many of our animals through feed yards. Feed yards and buyers from AL to TX, and also in KS and IA, recognize the quality of Leto Farms cattle. Identifying our loads of cattle as Brangus-sired progeny has helped bring light to the quality of Brangus feeder cattle at every stop.
We began retaining ownership of feeder calves five years ago. That data has yielded proof that investing in high quality genetics was the right decision. Our last few harvested sets have averaged 92% Choice or better with an average 2.9 Yield Grade and 64.5% dressing percentage, all while converting feed to gain in the feed yard below 6:1.
With an outstanding family legacy and a top-of-the-line commercial operation, Frank Johnston, his family and his team were honored to be named the 2024 International Brangus Breeders Association's Commercial Producer of the Year.
We have recently begun to use our highly fertile commercial cow herd as recips for embryo transfer. This gives us the ability to market front end registered females along with high performing bulls for other commercial producers to advance their programs.
